  FAQ

Why should one choose Bowen over other treatments?
  • Because it is non-invasive.
  • Because many conditions can be successfully treated in 4 or less treatmenrts.
  • BECAUSE IT WORKS!
Will the treatment hurt?
It is painless. There is no cracking, no force or heavy pressure, no hard probing and no needles. The treatment is very gentle, using only enough pressure to effect a movement of the tissue beneath.

What should I wear?
The treatment can be made through light clothing if the client wishes.

How many treatments will I need to have?
Everyone responds differently but on average, three or four sessions spaced one week apart are usually sufficient to achieve lasting relief, even from long-standing conditions.  Some problems may need more treatments and some fewer, but you certainly won’t be expected to have a long course of treatment if you find it is not working for you.

Although there are no guarantees, you should in most cases start to see positive change fairly quickly.  After the initial treatments your progress will be reassessed.

When should I come for therapy?
If other forms of therapy haven’t been helping you or only providing relief for a short time. Often we find that people have virtually given up on other therapies and have been carrying around aches and pains for many years.
  • If you are an athlete and wish to keep your body in peak-performance mode.
  • If you are recovering from a recent illness or injury.
  • If you are lacking energy.
Are there any side effects?
There are no adverse side effects from using the Bowen Technique. In fact it is known to enhance and complement conventional medicine and other complementary therapies.

What about Bowen Therapy and Sport?
Sports injury remedial therapy is becoming increasingly aware of the value of the Bowen Technique. It is very effective in speeding up the healing of sport-related injuries and if used regularly, is also able to maintain the athletic body in a state of peak performance and balance. (See Christine's Testimonial on the Testimonials page).

Sportspeople not only report a decrease in injuries but also a noticeable increase in performance.

Why is it called Bowen Therapy?
It is named after Thomas Ambrose Bowen (1916 – 1982) who began developing the technique in the 1950’s in Geelong,Victoria,Australia. He had a particular interest in ways to alleviate human suffering and began to notice that certain moves on the body had particular effects.

He continued to refine the technique during his lifetime, performing about 13,000 treatments a year.  While attending a national health conference in Adelaide in 1974, Mr Bowen met Mr Oswald Rentsch who asked if he could be taught the technique. Oswald spent the next two and a half years studying, then documenting the work.

In 1976, Ossie and his wife Elaine began utilizing the technique in their clinic.  After Mr Bowen’s death, Ossie and Elaine honored his request to teach the technique to others and named it “The Bowen Technique” or “Bowtech”. They held their first seminar in 1986 and by 1990 were teaching it full time throughout Australia. Since then they have been honoring Mr Bowen’s name and technique by introducing it throughout the world.

Through their efforts, the technique now has worldwide recognition, with a large number of instructors and thousands of practitioners in 15 countries. These numbers are steadily growing.

How is Bowen Therapy viewed by other health professionals?
There is a growing list of health professionals, including osteopaths, physiotherapists and chiropractors who are now recognizing the effectiveness of the technique and are using it in their practices.

The Bowen Technique is now being taught to final year university students of osteopathy here in Melbourne.

It has been reported that Russell Dick, an osteopath for many years and former Dean of Studies at the Northern Counties School of Osteopathy stated, “Bowen has turned my practice on its head, with 80% of my patients being given Bowen as a first choice.”
